DESCRIPTION

Cathedral is the latest chilling musical collaboration from legendary filmmaker and composer John Carpenter, created as the atmospheric soundtrack to an original graphic novel from Storm King Comics. Inspired by a dream Carpenter had in 2024, the project combines a terrifying supernatural story with a heavy, riff-driven score designed to feel like the soundtrack to a film that exists only in the imagination.

The story takes place in downtown Los Angeles, where an abandoned cathedral, a gruesome murder, and a powerful supernatural entity lurking beneath the city’s catacombs collide. Written by John Carpenter, Sandy King, and Sean Sobczak, the graphic novel unfolds alongside the album, with each musical track corresponding to a specific section of the story.

Musically, Cathedral continues Carpenter’s long-standing fascination with creating fear through sound while taking his signature electronic style into considerably heavier territory. The album retains the eerie atmosphere and ominous propulsion associated with classic Carpenter scores such as Halloween, The Fog, and Assault on Precinct 13, but adds a distinctly heavy metal-inspired, guitar-driven sound.

Daniel Davies takes centre stage with soaring guitar work on tracks including “Primeval,” “Elevator,” and the crushing “Lord of the Underground.” Meanwhile, John Carpenter and Cody Carpenter lead the atmospheric side of the record with synthesizers on “Desolation in the Underworld” and “Death of the Mapmaker,” while synths and strings converge on “Abandoned Cathedral.”

Unlike the Lost Themes albums, which were conceived as scores for imaginary movies, Cathedral provides the musical score for a tangible visual story. The album’s liner notes include prompts for each track, encouraging listeners to follow the graphic novel while experiencing the music, creating an immersive combination of music, horror, and sequential art.

Released by Sacred Bones Records, Cathedral offers another dark and cinematic journey into John Carpenter’s unmistakable universe. For fans of horror soundtracks, heavy electronic music, guitar-driven film scores, and Carpenter’s iconic body of work, this is a uniquely immersive experience designed to make you imagine the movie in your head.
