DESCRIPTION

Following the massive success of Shaft and Superfly, the 1970s saw a wave of independent Black cinema, producing soundtracks that remain essential for crate diggers and soul collectors. Among these hidden gems, the once-lost 1974 film Solomon King stands at the very top. Written, directed, produced by and starring Oakland entrepreneur Sal Watts, the film was far more than a vanity project — it was a showcase of the thriving Bay Area soul-funk scene.

Watts, who owned record labels and fashion stores in Oakland and served as executive producer of a local soul music TV program, brought together an impressive lineup of talent. The soundtrack was arranged and conducted by Southern soul legend and Ray Charles collaborator Jimmy Lewis, with songwriting contributions from Joyce Stiger (known for Bobby Bland’s “Recess in Heaven”). Backed by top-tier Oakland musicians, the result is a deep, groove-heavy funk score filled with propulsive rhythms, lush strings, and wah-wah guitar.

Original pressings have become highly sought-after collector’s items, often selling for hundreds of dollars. Now, in collaboration with Deaf Crocodile, Real Gone Music presents an expanded edition featuring bonus tracks sourced from rare Sal/Wa label 45s. Pressed on striking tiger swirl vinyl, this release is a must-have for fans of ’70s soul, funk, and Blaxploitation soundtracks.

Common Questions

What does 'pre-order' mean?

A pre-order product is a product which still needs to be produced. So, after your purchase, you won’t receive this product immediately. We strive to send these on the Release Date which you can find on the product page.

Keep in consideration that manufacturing processes can always turn out to be delayed so this Release Date, acts as a guideline.

I ordered a pre-order and an in-stock item. When will they ship?

If you place an order containing both pre-order and in-stock items, your entire order will be shipped on the latest pre-order date of any pre-ordered items. If you prefer not to wait, please place separate orders.

Pre-order items have an (expected) release date noted on the product page. We typically ship these items several days before their release date to ensure that you receive the record on—or as close as possible to—the release date.
